Bucks County Deputy Sheriff James Mitchell was driving in his blue county vehicle on the afternoon of Dec. 11 in Bristol Township when he heard a radio call for a dwelling fire on Wynfield Avenue.

The deputy got to the scene and found the house engulfed in flames.

Mitchell and passerby Mark Cook rushed toward the house after watching a woman go back in. She believed another woman was trapped.

At the time, Bristol Township Fire Marshal Kevin Dippolito said the woman fought with Mitchell as he tried to get her out of the burning house.

The deputy was able to pull the woman, who was later treated for smoke inhalation and burns, from the two-story home.

Commissioner Diane Marseglia awarded Mitchell with a commendation at the most recent county meeting.
