Beef brisket, chicken, ham, pulled pork and smoked sausage are just a few of the things on the menu at the new Dickey's Barbecue Pit that opened on Thursday, January 24.

College friends Dan Butler and Matthew Disharoon met at the University of Delaware when they were both freshmen. Butler, who hails from Harleysville, has several years of business management experience; New Jersey native Disharoon has been working in restaurants since the age of 17.

Dickey's, a 300-restaurant chain, started in Texas in 1941 and is still a family-owned business.

The restaurant prides itself on its homestyle food. In addition to all the meat options, there are sandwiches and sides of all kinds.

There's a kids menu, too - but even better than that, kids eat free on Sundays.

"Kids 12 and under eat free with an adult meal purchase," Butler said.

One of Dickey's symbols is their Big Yellow Cup. The Big Yellow Cup Club is the restaurant's loyalty club - you get a card labeled "I'm A Regular", and as you collect stamps on your card you earn free drinks or sandwiches.

There's also free soft-serve ice cream for everybody.

Butler said that he was drawn to Dickey's Barbecue Pit not only because it's a different menu from most of the restaurants in this area - Dickey's has a very strong commitment to bettering the communities they are in.

"We're going to be very community involved," Butler said.

Dickey's community efforts include fundraising nights where organizations can earn a percentage of the check totals for defined nights and times.

"Just about any fundraising organization can do it," Disharoon said. "Volunteer fire departments, police departments, sports teams...anybody."

"The community involvement is what drew me to Dickey's in the first place," Butler said. "We're going to do as much of that as we can."

Butler and Disharoon have been preparing to open for several months, and will finally hit that milestone this week.

Catering is available, holiday food - such as ham and turkey - is available, and online ordering is coming soon.

Dickey's Barbecue Pit is located at 301 North Lewis Road in the Park Towne Plaza shopping center, near Amelia's Grocery Outlet. Regular hours are seven days a week, 11:00am to 9:00pm, except for Christmas Day and Thanksgiving Day.
