BROOMALL–In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Russell Elementary School is pulling together to help those in need. Russell has partnered up with Island Heights Volunteer Fire Co. 1, who are in desperate need of the following items:
- Medical supplies (bandaids, ointment, alcohol, peroxide, etc.)
- Sweat pants
- Protein bars
- Gift Cards to: Target, Kmart, Cosco, BJS and Walmart
- Personal checks can be made out to the Dick Gabriel Hurricane Memorial Fund
St. Pius X School parents Helen Molloy and Patrizia Rizzi–who also has children at Loomis Elementary School–are also spearheading a local collection drive to help victims of Hurricane Sandy.
Their main goal is to help the children of those victims by donating care packages that will include basic necessities. According to their private Facebook group "Care Packages for Jersey":
"I am going to put this out there and hopefully will get a big response. I am sure many of us know someone at the shore that has lost many of their assets and many of these people have children. I already reached out to one of my children's schools to try and put together a fundraiser, but I would like to ask all of you for help. I would like to put together at least 500 care packages for kids that include basic necessities such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, washcloths and a towel and adding a warm fuzzy blanket, a stuffed animal, a book. Please let me know if you are interested in helping out.You can either donate items or send a check and I will buy what we are missing. Please pass this around. I will send you a PO Box # you can mail a check to if interested and I will make sure to let you know I have received it. Thank you in advance."
Molloy said they are currently advising people to drop off donations at their homes or at St. Pius X. Molloy said though they aren't an official fundraising or collection organization, the mission is to simply: "Just a group of parents trying to help other parents."
