Contract for Moon Military Commissary Set to be Awarded

Construction on the project could begin as early as this summer.

Contract for Moon Military Commissary Set to be Awarded

A site preparation contract for a long-planned Moon Township military commissary could be awarded in the coming days, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The newspaper quotes Dennis Davin, director of Allegheny County's Economic Development, as saying that the U.S. Defense Commissary Agency could award a contract for the project as early as next week.

Davin could not be reached for comment.

Construction on the 43,000-square foot building is slated to begin this year. The commissary, which will serve as a grocery store and trading post for the area's military personnel, will be located on county-owned land at the corner of Interstate 376 and University Boulevard.

The facility will replace the existing commissary in Oakdale

The to bring the new commissary to Western Pennsylvania has been more than seven years in the making: In 2005, the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission targeted the Oakdale commissary for closure.

When completed the commissary will serve more than 160,000 military personnel in the tri-state region.
