Curbside Textile Recycling Now Available in Newtown

Residents of Newtown are the first in the region to be offered curbside textile recycling as part of a new initiative to make the world a little greener.

Community Recycling has partnered with George Leck and Son Waste Services to offer the new program, which launched today. They hope to expand it to neighboring communities in the near future.

In the past, curbside recycling has been limited to glass, aluminum, plastic and paper, but now customers can be provided with two duffle bags. The bags will be replaced at the time of each pickup.

“The program is designed to make clothing recycling as convenient as possible for all residents,” said Ira Baseman, president/CEO of Community Recycling, which is based in Fairless Hills.

Items that can be recycled as part of the program include unwanted clothing, hats, shoes, linens, purses and belts. Click here for a full list of items accepted.

Bags will be picked up twice a month --on the first and third weeks of the month. Click here for the full schedule.

“The program, from our company stand point, is for a firm environmental reason: to be green and to make sure these items are not going into the waste stream and not being thrown out," said Tina Leck of George Leck and Son Waster Services.”

In the next four to six weeks, Leck said said the company hopes to expand the program to Upper and Lower Makefield, Wrightstown, Doylestown, and Buckingham

“The importance to continually be green, recycle and to reuse as many products from the home is very important,” said Leck.

“All of our materials collected either go here or abroad for reuse,"  Baseman said. "This is just the beginning and we have great plans to expand this program here and really start bringing this program to other parts of the region.”

Customers who want textile recycling bags can contact Leck at 215-675-8000 or visit www.georgeleckandson.com for more information.
