New BCCC Exhibit Showcases Bucks County Artists

The works of four local artists are being showcased at Bucks County Community College's Hicks Art Center Gallery through Dec. 15.

The show, “Bucks County Artists: A Cross Section," features book artist Barbara Moon Boertzel of Doylestown, photographer Paula Chamlee of Ottsville, painter Alex Cohen of Newtown and printmaker Deborah Bruns-Thomas of Perkasie.

Guest curator Lisa Naples says one way to view a culture is through the art it leaves behind.

“It is those artifacts that express the flavor of the current day or the experience of those living in it that capture my imagination,” said Naples, a Doylestown-based artist and teacher. “Artists invent, document and offer traces of currents within a culture undetected by most non-artists.”

“Each is connected to the others by virtue of their need to manifest that which is personal to their internal life, externally,” Naples explained. “They do it in four different media and carry it off to great effect. In so doing, they provide pieces of a map to the life of Bucks County today.”

There are three opportunities to meet the artists. All three events are free and open to the public.

On Monday, Nov. 26, “A Conversation with Paula Chamlee” takes place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Registration is required. Call 215-504-8531.

An artists’ panel discussion takes place from 2:30 to 4 p.m. on Nov. 28 in the Gallagher Room of the Rollins Center. That will be followed by a Gallery Reception from 5 to 7 p.m., including a Curator’s Gallery Talk with Naples at 6 p.m., in the Hicks Art Center Gallery.

The college is located at 275 Swamp Rd., Newtown, Pa., 18940, where there is ample free parking. Gallery hours are Monday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon. For more information, visit  www.bucks.edu/gallery or call 215-968-8425.

“Bucks County Artists: A Cross Section” is supported by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency, though the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA), its regional arts funding partnership.  State government funding for the arts depends upon an annual appropriation by the Pennsylvania General Assembly and from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.  PPA is administered in this region by the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance
