Newtown, PA Responds to Newtown, CT School Shooting

Friday’s school shooting in Newtown, CT has shaken the nation and caused individual communities to respond with vigils and action plans. Newtown, PA is no exception.

A candlelight vigil was held Sunday night at Lutheran Church of God's Love in memory of the victims.

Friday's events also prompted Council Rock School District Superintendent Mark Klein to address parents in an email Sunday.

“As we enter school on Monday, please know that our administrative team met Sunday afternoon to prepare for opening school,” he said.

Students in middle and high school opened the day with a short moment of silence during homeroom. Elementary students did not have a moment of silence but Klein said parents should expect the issue would be addressed in the class “morning meeting.”

All Council Rock schools will have counseling resources available Monday, Klein noted.

Klein assured parents that the district’s schools are safe.

“We have done a variety of internal and external audits over the past five years with results that always praise Council Rock’s emergency procedures,” he said, noting students participate in various drills to prepare for a threat.

“Comprehensive emergency plans are in place in all of our schools.  Our collaboration with township police departments creates great resources for our schools and the intimate knowledge of school facilities and procedures for our first responders,” Klein said.
