There was standing room only in Norristown’s Municipal Hall Monday evening at the Norristown Recreation Committee’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. “Living the Dream” Awards Ceremony, which honored two people who serve the Norristown community, and treated those present to talented local singers.

Bill Plichta, Norristown’s Recreation Director, introduced the guests and the evening’s two honorees, Steve Ferguson, who volunteers with local youth, and Theresa Oliver, who is the Executive Director of the Literacy Council of Norristown. The two received plaques and $250 will be donated to each of their favorite charities.

The evening began at 6 p.m. Plichta gave a special thanks to Ferguson, who worked to make the evening possible, as well as Main Street Pizza, who has been donating pizzas to the event for the past eight years, and the municipality of Norristown.

Plichta cheerfully acknowledged those in attendance, including district judge Francis J. Lawrence, Jr., state rep. Matt Bradford, Norristown councilmembers Linda Christian, Gary Simpson, William Caldwell, Sonya (Fisher) Sanders and Olivia Brady, and Norristown’s municipal administrator Crandall Jones.

A number of singers performed, starting with children from the J.K. Gotwals Elementary School, who were followed by Carrie Porter, 12-year-old Danavia Williams, Mt. Zion AME singers, Stasha Jackson and a group called Wings of Love.
