PAL Center Plays Host to Friday Night Lock In

More than 100 young people joined the One Love Club and other Norristown Clubs United groups at Greater Norristown PAL for an overnight lock in on Friday.

It's an oft-heard complaint in Norristown today – there's nothing for the kids to do. With underfunded after-school programs and a dearth of youth-focused activities in town, adults and kids alike struggle with the issue. Enter Norristown's One Love Club.

One of the many Norristown Clubs United groups, the One Love Club took up the mantle and ran with an idea born out of several community meetings held late last year by a collection fo concerned citizens and groups responding to a rash of violence that erupted in October. The idea? An all-night lock in where young people could come, hang out and have fun in a safe environment with adult supervision.

"We had somewhere between 125 and 150 kids," said Buck Jones, a community organizer who helped put the night together.

The kids and the volunteer mentors spent the entire night in the Greater Norristown PAL Center on Harding Boulevard playing basketball and video games, talking, dancing and just relaxing with friends.

"It was really successful," said Jones. "so we're definitely going to do it again. Definitely."

Check out the video slideshow of the night uploaded by YouTube user L Diggs to see just how much fun everyone had.
