You Go, Girl: Judge Rules Pa. Girl May Join Boys’ Wrestling Team

You go, girl: A federal judge has ruled that a Pennsylvania seventh-grader can join her school’s all-male wrestling team.

The 14-year-old girl, Audrianna Beattie, recently moved to the Line Mountain School District, near Harrisburg,  The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Audrianna had wrestled at her old school in Iowa, but was prohibited from doing so once she moved to Pennsylvania.

Among the reasons she was not permitted by the district to join the all-male team were concerns that boys should not be aggressive toward girls, and concerns that boys would be embarrassed if pinned by a girl, The Inquirer said.

U.S. Middle District Judge Matthew W. Brann on Monday ruled that those reasons were unjustified,  PennLive reported. Brann said in his ruling that Line Mountain could take no action that would interfere with Audrianna’s participation on the wrestling team.

Audrianna had been wrestling since the third grade, The Inquirer said.
