The Plymouth Whitemarsh High School Department of Music will present the annual Winter Concert on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at 7:30 p.m., in the PWHS Auditorium located at 201 East Germantown Pike, featuring the Concert Band, Chorus and Orchestra.
Heather Nuneviller, Plymouth Whitemarsh High School Principal, will give the opening remarks. In the first concert under the baton of Mrs. Elise Derewitz, the Orchestra will begin with “American Landscape” by Soon Hee Newbold.
“I value this piece to an extreme amount because it reminds me of how much of a wonderful country America is,” violinist Minaya Ismayilova said in a release. "We should all be grateful to be living here.”
The set list for the orchestra includes “Brandenburg Concerto No. 3” by J.S. Bach, “Blue Fire Fiddler" and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” arranged by Pennsylvania native Jerry Brubaker. The medley is comprised of “You’re a Mean one, Mr. Grinch”, “He carves the Roast Beast”, and “Welcome Christmas.”
The chorus, directed by Mrs. Amy LaRue, will perform “Personnent Hodie” by Gustav Holst and feature the Handbell Choir. Joyce Jo is the student accompanist for “He Watching Over Israel” by Felix Mendelssohn. The final chorus selection will be “Exsultate Deo” by Alessandro Scarlatti.
“I like that I get to explore singing in other languages in choir through a variety of types of music, such as this piece," Soprano Laura Pontari said.
The Men’s Acappella will perform “Christmastime is Here” arranged by Deke Sharon
Mrs. Tonia Kaufman conducts the Concert Band. Seniors Gabrielle Peel, flute; Susan Na, flute; and Charlie Tabachnick, tenor sax; will perform solos during the Robert W. Smith selection, “Into the Storm.” Stephen Bulla’s “Klezmer Dances” features clarinetists Joshua Rosen and Lauren Babillis. “Dashing Through the Snow” is based on the holiday season classic, “Jingle Bells.” Then the Concert Band invites alumni to the stage for the annual performance of “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson.
This year’s extra special concert finale is a medley of holiday songs titled “It’s a Holiday Season” that performed in mass by the Concert Band, Chorus and Orchestra.
The concert is free of charge on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at 7:30 p.m., in the PWHS Auditorium located at 201 East Germantown Pike.
