At the end of the 2012, a new store found its home on Ridge Avenue.
The Other Store, a second-hand store and recycling center helps move used goods throughout the community to those who need them, set up its second location at the former location of Coyle’s Café, and has started to recycle Roxborough, one piece of used furniture and equipment at a time.
But The Other Stores are more than recycling centers and more than used-good stores.
For owner and founder Jesse Raphial, the stores are an opportunity to “recycle the country one neighborhood at a time” and create a network within a neighborhood that makes connections with individuals, families and organizations in need.
By sharing used goods organizations and neighbors with limited budgets have an opportunity to gain necessary materials and equip while the store promotes a healthier, cleaner world by keeping these goods out of landfills on the local level.
Through the stores’ Facebook, interested people can post what items they have and what they may be looking for. The stores make these connections and even offer a pick-up and delivery service for these goods so that they will not go to waste. Innumerable antiques, food, clothing, hardware, toys, furniture, metal, electronics, books videos and music, and other household goods have stayed out of dumps and made it to interested hands through The Other Stores.
Unlike many thrift and secondhand stores, The Other Stores focus on accessibility for all by touting a wide range of goods and the lowest prices around, including a free section.
“There is always someone in need of something somewhere,” Raphial said. “We are currently looking to make more relationships and to help others in the Roxborough area, so if anyone knows anyone in need, a purpose that needs help or a fundraiser we can get involved with, please contact us.”
The Other Store accepts donations of just about anything except beds or couches with stains, odors or tears or particle/pressboard furniture that falls apart when moving. People are encouraged to call if they are in doubt.
