This weekend was a special one for the Quaker Valley High School Class of 1972. Classmates from near and far met up for a tailgate at the football game Friday night, and reminiscing about old times.

“When we meet, it’s like we didn’t miss a day,” said Tom Girle, a lifelong Sewickley resident and chairman of the reunion committee.

On Saturday night, 140 of the 240 classmates—setting the record for the largest class yet to graduate from Quaker Valley according to Girle—enjoyed their formal 40th reunion at the Edgeworth Club.

Today, the 1972 basketball team will be officially inducted into the Quaker Valley Hall of Fame during a banquet ceremony at the Sewickley Heights Golf Club.

Girle said the team is the first group to be inducted. (There was no girls basketball team back then). The team was introduced on the football field at Friday's game.

Girle spent two and a half years researching to find classmates who live all over the world, including Europe and Canada. A committee of 10 then worked to set up the weekend gathering, he said.

It wasn't hard getting in touch with some folks. Girle said there is a high rate of inter-class marriage, including he and his wife Shelley, both 1972 grads.

"We're the type of class that we were always the close class," he said, pointing out that 210 classmates attended the 20th reunion.

“We’re all over the world and we stay in touch," Girle said. "

Plans for another reunion in five years is already in the works.
