Conestoga Crew Club 2014 Race Results: 1st Manny Flicks/Horvat Regatta

Conestoga Crew Club 2014 Race Results: 1st Manny Flicks/Horvat Regatta Conestoga Crew Club 2014 Race Results: 1st Manny Flicks/Horvat Regatta Conestoga Crew Club 2014 Race Results: 1st Manny Flicks/Horvat Regatta

With only two weeks of water practice under their oars due to the harsh winter conditions, Conestoga Crew Club’s JV and Varsity crews had an impressive showing in the 1st Manny Flick/Horvat Series Regatta of the 2014 season.  Conestoga crossed the finish line with a total of four 1st place wins, two 2nd place finishes, and three 3rd place finishes.

Conestoga’s girls did not let Sunday’s cold temperatures slow them down.  The Girls JV Quad started the day with a 1st place victory for juniors Maddie Beirne, Amy Connell, Emily Hompe and Angela Sarkisian. The Girls Lightweight Quad brought home another 1st place finish with senior Katie Groves, sophomore Carly Robins, senior Sophie Bodek and sophomore Anna Zibinski.  Also rowing to victory were senior Annie Graf, sophomore Caroline Gosnear, senior Emer Ryle and senior Meagan Hudson, who set the pace in the Girls Varsity Quad event.  They were followed across the line by their Conestoga teammates, seniors Sarah Thomas, Rachael Devlin, Annina Ruggirello and Brianna Kaufman, who placed third.

The Conestoga boys put on an impressive show of their own.  Starting the day off for the boys, sophomores Teddy McGovern and Anders Backstrom took second in the Boys Lightweight Double.  Juniors Austin Coney, and Tim Kao and sophomores Maarten and Carleton Monster rowed to a 3rd place finish in the Boys JV Quad.  Next up for Conestoga was the Boys Lightweight Quad, with sophomores Micky Kling and Ryan Hollinger and juniors Max Malarkey and Hanan Zisling finishing second.  Conestoga entered two crews in the Boys Varsity Quad event which was divided into two heats.  Junior Niall Carlson, sophomore Jake Novak, and seniors Andrey Lanahan and Sean Pepin finished 3rd in the first heat of the Boys Varsity Quad.  In the next race, seniors Nathan Leibowitz and Tyler Simpson, sophomore Chris Ferris, and junior Steven Devlin held on to their lead to cross the line first in the second heat of the Boys Varsity Quad event.

Ice on the Schuylkill River may have set back Conestoga’s water training schedule, but this first regatta of the Spring series is proof that it will take more than a record breaking winter to slow down the Conestoga rowers!

Conestoga Crew Club looks forward to more racing on the Schuylkill this Sunday as the 2nd Manny Flick/Horvat Series Regatta takes place.
