Crews Installing Temporary Safety Median on Pell Bridge

Long-term study of permanent concrete barriers is in the works.

Crews Installing Temporary Safety Median on Pell Bridge
A longstanding demand for safety markers along the center line on the Claiborne Pell Bridge is being fulfilled today.

The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority started installing the temporary barrier on Thursday and is in the process of studying whether a permanent, concrete barrier is feasible.

The narrow cones are about three feet tall and sit on raised bases. They will be spaced about 20-feet apart.

Though the markers won't stop cars from crossing the center line, nor will it completely prevent a head-on collision, the turnpike authority believes they'll serve as a visual reminder to keep people alert and in their lanes.

The project cost is about $100,000.
