Downpours were expected to continue into the night Monday.

Parts of Rhode Island were soaked with nearly 6 inches of rain in the last 24 hours.

The highest unofficial total for Sunday morning through Monday morning was 5.86 inches in Hope Valley,  according to the National Weather Service. Providence received 4 inches.

NWS reported the following totals in Providence County:
  • Johnston: 3.45
  • Cranston: 3.29
  • Woonsocket: 3.26
The following totals were reported in Newport County:
  • Middletown: 4.08
  • Portsmouth: 3.94
  • Little Compton: 3.45

The rain caused havoc across the region, triggering a mudslide, delaying Amtrak service, and trapping at least one vehicle in floodwater.

Rain was expected to continue through Monday night. The forecast  called for sun the rest of the week.
