Mayor Fung Wants to Bring the Super Bowl to Foxboro

Calls for Providence to be host city, formation of host committee of government and business leaders.

Mayor Fung Wants to Bring the Super Bowl to Foxboro
Cranston Mayor and Rhode Island Republican candidate for Governor Allan W. Fung today pitched the idea of bringing the Super Bowl to Foxboro, Mass., by forming a "host committee of business leaders, mayors and other government in the region."

The announcement was posted on the mayor's Facebook page and in it, he said the host committee could "assist in any and all efforts Rhode Island could do in order to help Mr. Kraft bring the Super Bowl to Foxboro in 2019."

The arrangement would make Providence the host city — much like how New Jersey hosted the game but New York was the host city this year.

"Rhode Island would be the perfect host city for the Super Bowl," Fung said. "We have beautiful hotels, amazing retail shops, great restaurants, and most importantly, direct access to Foxboro Stadium with our commuter rail and taxi stop in Providence."

Fung said leaders from Commerce RI (formerly the state Economic Development Commission) could join forces with various chambers of commerce and the convention and visitors bureau "to come together with business leaders in our state and assist the patriots and the NFL with a vision of what Rhode Island truly has to offer."

So what do you think of the idea?
