The Cranston man charged with using a baseball bat to assault a Johnston resident was sentenced to a five years in prison, with two to serve.

Superior Court Judge Walter R. Stone imposed the sentence on Aug. 28, after Michael Norton entered a no-contest plea at his arraignment.

Stone also ordered Norton to serve three years' probation and a three-year suspended sentence, concurrently, as part of the plea agreement, according to online court records.

According to Johnston Police, witnesses said Norton hit the victim during a party at a home on Borden Avenue. The victim suffered serious injuries in the attack.

Norton fled the scene following the Aug. 18 assault, and surrendered to police on Aug. 23.
