Rhode Island escaped a direct hit from Hurricane Sandy, which has claimed at least 33 lives in the United States and has caused an unprecedented amount of damage to some New England States.
Middletown experienced powerful winds and storm swells and like most hurricanes in the past, it downed trees and power lines - but brought out surfers from across the state.
Luckily, the only reported incident was that of a kite surfer who was rescued by the Coast Guard after he lost control of his gear.
Did you surf in the storm or have you surfed hurricanes in the past? Tell us in the comments.
