Woman Breaks into Apartment, Puts on Victim's Underwear, Leaves Rosary Beads

A 50-year-old Warwick woman is facing charges of breaking and entering.

Middletown Police charged a 50-year-old Warwick woman with breaking and entering on Thursday after she broke into a Warren Avenue apartment, drank wine, changed her shirt and underwear and left behind her car keys and rosary beads.

Police said they arrived at the scene to find Joan Marie Viveiros, 50, of 505 Church Ave., Warwick, in her car, telling police she was waiting for her husband to drop off her keys.

A landlord told police that Viveiros had been in the driveway for a few hours and was asked to leave because she was parked in a tenant’s parking space.

A check of the building showed the door to one apartment was slightly open. Police said a check of the apartment with the resident, who arrived a short time later, showed a blanket that was on a foot rest was on the floor along with two TV remotes. A stack of magazines and an iPad that had been in a neat pile were spread out. A blue rosary was found in the bedroom and in the kitchen, there were two boxes of Franzia boxed wine open on the kitchen counter.

The tenant said the wine wasn’t open and the boxes were in the fridge when she left at around 11 a.m. that morning.

A bag of wine ended up in the sink, police said, and there was a nearby wine glass with lip marks on the counter.

Police said there was evidence someone had used the toilet and a turquoise shirt was found on the floor. Under the shirt were Viveiros’ keys.

Once in police custody, Viveiros reportedly said she started looking around, saw an unlocked door and went in.

She said she urinated, had a green tea soda from the fridge, took the boxes of wine out, opened one and it began leaking on the floor, prompting her to put it in the sink.

She then told police that she sat on the couch for a while, then changed her shirt in the bathroom and evidently forgot to take it with her.

At some point, she said she took off her underwear, leaving them “somewhere in the apartment” and took a pair of the tenant’s underwear, which she was still wearing when she was at Middletown Police Headquarters.

Police seized the underwear.
