Here are the Five Things, sports-style, for Monday, January 9, 2012:

Grapplers earn third place at tournament. It was a successful weekend for the Mariners’ wrestling team, as the team finished third overall and had two first place winners at the 2012 Chad Antoch Memorial Tournament in Westerly.   • Second place: Christian Tierney, 106;
  • Third place: Jim Cook, 152; Greg Hamilton, 195.
  • Fourth place: Daniel Stern-Lonczak, 145; Matt Storti, 170; Christian Moroski, 195.
  • Also competing: Seamus Mathieu, 113; Austin Ranney and Robert Peterson, 126; Matt McGreen and Jimmy Kershaw, 132; Reed Nelson, 138; Mitch Kennedy, 182; Riley Chapman, 285.

All sports, all teams, all the time! We’re past the holidays – at least until MLK Jr. Day next week – so pretty much every sports team for NHS is back in action. Let’s break it down for the next two days though, so you don’t get overwhelmed. Today at 4:30 p.m., girls’ swimming (0-2, 0-2 Division I) hosts North Kingstown (2-0, 2-0 Division I) at the Tootell Aquatic Center at the University of Rhode Island. At 5:30 p.m., some members of the wrestling team will be competing at Smithfield High School in a quad meet with Hope, Smithfield and Middletown. Tuesday night, the boys’ basketball team (4-5, 2-3 Division II-South) travels to Cumberland (7-3, 4-1 Division II-North) for a 7 p.m. game. Junior varsity plays at 5:15 p.m.

“College sports athletes, come out and play!” I know we’re still missing some college athletes from , especially Prout graduates.  We added CCRI freshman and indoor track athlete Marciano Brunette yesterday, and today, URI undergrad and men’s crew athlete Reilly Loomis is on the page. As various seasons conclude and continue, I’ll be sprinkling in updates, such as…

Garris logs double-digit starts for D-III Gwynedd-Mercy girls’ soccer. Senior midfielder Amelia Garris, a 2008 graduate of Narragansett High School, started seven games for Gwynedd-Mercy. She played in 19 of the Griffins’ 20 games, and logged 13 shots. Garris started in five of the Griffins’ 10 conference games. Gwynedd-Mercy finished 7-10-3 overall, and 7-2-2 in conference play.

Bolster logs 11 games for D-III Keene State girls’ soccer. Junior midfielder Elise Bolster, a 2009 graduate of Narragansett High School, got into 11 games this year for Keene State. She logged five shots, three of them on goal.
