There's a new store in downtown Wakefield starting today, Saturday, and you might want to pop in — for a cake pop.

Or a custom cake, pastry, cupcakes, cookie, chocolate dipped goodie or a cup of Dave's Coffee with a muffin or scone.

Sweet Althea's is now open in the River's Edge marketplace on Main Street in Wakefield and it marks a big step forward for owner Kim Curtis.

For the last few years, Curtis has run Sweet Althea's out of a small spot in Galilee, making custom cakes and building her reputation as a baker and pastry chef.

But that was a seasonal operation, so today's grand opening marks a big plunge for Curtis, who has spent the last few weeks with her husband, Drew Curtis, getting the new shop ready.

"We have been working so hard it has been crazy!" Curis said. "My husband did the entire remodel, from decks to dormers. We are really excited to be part of the downtown Wakefield community. Everyone has been so supportive."

It has been a long journey to get to today and Curtis hopes locals stop in for a treat or to consider Sweet Althea's for their next major event. And she hopes that folks from out of town make long journeys themselves to try one of her fine desserts.

The custom cakes, cupcakes, cake pops and other treats are all made fresh to order with organic and local ingredients when they're available.

The retail store will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed Tuesdays.

The entire line of Rhode Island-based Dave's Coffee is available, including espressos, lattes and cappuccino.

Come Memorial Day, the shop will be open until 10 p.m. and will offer several varieties of Italian Ice. Sounds like a nice dessert stop after a dinner date.

Sweet Althea's is located at 406A Main Street. You can call 401-932-9473 or visit their Web site by clicking HERE.
