The following incidents were reported by the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

The Newport Police Department reported the following arrests on Wednesday, Jan 16. 

Driver 3 Times Over Legal Limit Says She Came from Narcotics Anonymous

A 23-year-old Middletown woman was arrested Wednesday around 10 p.m. for driving with a BAC of nearly 3 times the legal limit, said Newport police. Alyssa Melson, of 411 Semmes St., Middletown, was pulled over after police observed her driving erratically on Connell Highway. When asked where she was coming from, she reportedly said Delaware, and then changed her answer to a Narcotics Anonymous meeting, said police. Police said they found two empty nip sized bottles of vodka on the passenger seat. Police said when she got out of the car for the field sobriety tests, she switched from crying to laughing uncontrollably. At the station, Melson registered a BAC .219 and a .235.  She was charged with driving under the influence .15 or greater.

Indecent Assault and Battery on Child

Mark Harmon, 57, of an unknown address in Newport was arrested Wednesday at 3:20 p.m. on charges of being a fugitive from justice. He was wanted by the New Bedford Police Department for indecent assault and battery on a child under 14.

Alleged Drunk Driver Hits Pole

Justin Viau, 43 of 3 Bush Street, was arrested Thursday around 2 a.m. for driving under the influence and for driving with a suspended license. He allegedly hit a pole on Wellington Ave. and left the area towards Thames Street. He was pulled over on Spring Street and smelled of alcohol, said police.

Other Arrests

  • Christopher Dashnaw, 26, 195 Admiral Kalbfus Rd. Apt #7H, was arrested Wednesday around 5:45 p.m. on three warrants.

  • Lindsey Schuster, 29, of 13 Resevoir Ave., Middletown, was arrested Wednesday around 9:45 p.m. on charges of domestic assault. Police said they responded to an altercation at the Pineapple Inn.
