Bristol Woman Charged With DUI After Wild Route 24 Drive

A Bristol woman was arrested on Route 24 in Tiverton on Saturday, Aug. 13, and charged with driving drunk after an alleged erratic drive that ended when  had to use their cruisers as a barrier to stop her car.

April Andrade, 39, of 10 Division St., Bristol, was arrested at 10:30 p.m. Saturday on Rt. 24 northbound. She was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, eluding police (first offense), duty in an accident resulting in damage to a highway fixture, several laned roadway violations, stopping on a traveled portion of open highway and leaving the right lane of travel.

According to Lt. Patrick Jones, police received a witness report that night of an erratic driver on the Sakonnet River Bridge who allegedly struck a jersey barrier, blew out a tire and continued north on Route 24.

"They attempted to stop the vehicle but it continued northbound," said Jones.

He said the driver, later identified as Andrade, was all over the road, driving in the middle of the roadway and, at one point, drove into the median, stopped, then backed out into the northbound lane.

With northbound traffic becoming backed up, Jones said Tiverton Police were able to position their vehicles just north of the Eagleville Road overpass to serve as a barricade to stop the driver from harming herself, striking another vehicle and going into Massachusetts.

Back at the police station, Jones said, Andrade's breathalyzer test revealed readings of .142 and .143.
