Police Log: 4 Arrests in Past 6 Days

Portsmouth made the following arrests in the past six days: 

  • Sean Jobin, 21, of East Providence, was arrested on Saturday, Oct. 22, after his vehicle apparently broke down after striking a tree near the . Police were called to Anthony Road near the country club for a report of a hit and run. The caller, Jobin, told police a vehicle had struck his car and drove off. However, police say they later learned there wasn't a second vehicle involved. "They made up a fictitious vehicle," said Lt. Brian Peters. A vehicle, driven by Jobin, had instead struck a tree and then broke down about a 100 feet from the country club, police said. It was then Jobin called 911 to report the hit and run, according to Peters. Officers detected an aroma of alcohol on the driver's breathe. Jobin apparently failed a field sobriety test and, after being transported to Newport Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, allegedly refused a chemical test. He was charged with driving under the influence (DUI), refusal to submit to a chemical test and obstruction of an officer in the execution of duty. 
  • Two men were arrested on Sunday, Oct. 23, at the after security officers said they smelled marijuana coming from a room. Christopher Szapor, 19, of Egg Harbor Township, NJ, and Benjamin Theriault, 20, of Little Compton, were both arrested and charged with possession of marijuana. Police responded to the dorms and say they found a small amount of marijuana on both men. They were transported to the police station and later released with a district court summons. 
  • Timothy Cowell, 43, of 153 Viking Drive, Portsmouth, was arrested on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at his residence. Cowell was wanted on a bench warrant from Fourth District Court for failure to appear at an ability to pay hearing. He was taken into custody at his home Wednesday and transported to court.
