Local Finds: Sea Island South Carolina Rums. Flavors include three varieties: Gold Rum, Java Rum and Spice Rum.
Who’s making it: Firefly Distillery on Wadmalaw Island
How’s it made: Using sugar cane from South Carolina, Florida and Louisiana, then aging the rum in bourbon barrels creates a unique flavor. Utilizing a Lowcountry twist is key for Firefly Distillery, which is why they use sugar cane from famed Johns Island resident and Rosebank Farms owner, Sidi Limehouse. Each rum has its own distinct flavor and can be served over ice or mixed in your favorite cocktail.
Where can you find it: Sea Island Rums are sold exclusively in South Carolina. Find a retailer that sells on the distillery’s website.
What’s it all about: Firefly Distillery is located on Wadmalaw Island, thirty miles South of Charleston, South Carolina and is the largest distillery in the state. Firefly was created in 2008 by co-founders Scott Newitt and Jim Irvin. The distillery currently produces Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka, four Sweet Tea Vodka Flavors: Lemon, Raspberry, Mint and Peach, Firefly Handcrafted Vodka, Sweet Tea Bourbon and Sea Island Rums.
There are three flavors of rum:
Sea Island Gold Rum uses Johns Island sugar cane and is aged for two years in Buffalo Trace Bourbon Barrels. This smooth rum has hints of oak, bourbon and vanilla.
Sea Island Spice Rum uses our Sea Island Gold Rum as the base, and then a blend of natural spices is added to create a distinct flavor. Taste the hints of vanilla, oak, butterscotch and bourbon.
Sea Island Java Rum combines two island favorites, coffee and rum for an exquisite taste. We use 100 percent Colombian coffee and infuse this with our Sea Island Gold Rum.
