Local nonprofits gain state, national project funding (kodiakdailymirror.com) — Several Kodiak nonprofits just received fresh funding that could expand local services, from recovery support to senior meals and emergency shelter. KANA’s Island Strong program gained a major Mental Health Trust grant, while American Seafoods’ community program awarded $15,000 to groups serving seniors, families, youth, and conservation efforts across Kodiak Island communities.
   

2. Kodiak attorney sues borough over drainage, flooding on Lilly Drive (kodiakdailymirror.com) — A Kodiak attorney and Lilly Drive homeowner is suing the Kodiak Island Borough, claiming poorly maintained culverts and ditches have funneled stormwater into several properties and her own flooded basement since 2019. The suit asks the court to force drainage repairs, reroute runoff, and cover damages and costs, with the borough required to respond in Kodiak Superior Court by Oct. 27.
   

3. Kodiak runners set PRs at Washington meet (kodiakdailymirror.com) — Kodiak High School’s cross country season wrapped up in Washington with 11 of 12 runners setting lifetime-best times, including standout finishes by both girls and boys. Local runners like freshman Charlotte Deemer and Val Trout led the way, showing Kodiak athletes can compete strongly against large fields from across Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.
   

4. 'Their wintering range spans thousands of miles': what Kodiak and Shemya tell us about emperor geese (kmxt.org) — Kodiak’s shorelines are one of two key sites scientists are using to study how emperor geese survive Bering Sea winters and why their population has declined. New research shows birds wintering near Kodiak are generally heavier, more juvenile-rich, and eating higher-protein foods than those on Shemya, raising questions about changing habitat quality across the Aleutians.
