📰 News we're reading

• Seward unveils wellness vending machine (kbbi.org) — A new free community wellness vending machine is now operating outside the Qutekcak Native Tribe building in Seward, offering Narcan, basic medicines, and hygiene items around the clock with no ID or payment required. City officials and tribal leaders partnered on the project after a local overdose death, and they’ll adjust supplies seasonally based on anonymous user surveys to better meet community needs.

• Former Seward Police Department Officer Matthew Susko Convicted and Sentenced for Driving With Screen Operating (alaska-native-news.com) — A former Seward Police Department officer has been fined for driving with an active phone screen while transporting a 15-year-old from Seward to Soldotna in poor winter conditions. As part of his guilty plea, he permanently gave up his Alaska police certification and can no longer work in law enforcement in the state.

• Proposed winter ferry schedule skips service to Cordova, other Gulf of Alaska communities (kmxt.org) — Alaska’s draft winter ferry schedule could leave Cordova and Yakutat without service for months, and lawmakers who also represent Seward are urging the state to find alternatives. Residents still have a short window to submit comments or speak at virtual meetings, which could influence future marine highway options affecting Southcentral and Gulf of Alaska travel connections.
