• Mark Timothy Smith (keweenawreport.com) — A man born in Melrose Park and later living in Crystal Lake and Naperville, has died unexpectedly at 57, with a celebration of life planned in Naperville on May 1. His life centered on construction and engineering work, deep ties to Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, and devotion to his three sons. Memorial donations are suggested for conservation and reforestation efforts. 
• Breakers Palm Beach guests foil theft of $32,500 Hermès bag from room (palmbeachpost.com) — Two people from Melrose Park were arrested in Florida after guests at The Breakers Palm Beach reportedly interrupted an attempted theft of a $32,500 Hermès handbag and other items from their hotel room. The pair, both 35, face burglary and theft charges and have pleaded not guilty. They were released on bond and ordered to avoid contact with the guests.
