It is the second deadly shooting at the nightclub. In May 2015, 17-year-old Brandon Williams was gunned down on the dance floor. In July of that year, Christian Evans, 19, was charged with criminal homicide, later upgraded to premeditated/intentional first-degree murder and felony murder.

The Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission in June 2015, noting that the club had a history of difficulty maintaining order, prohibited Kilimanjaro from selling any alcohol except for beer.
