U2 Will Headline Bonnaroo

Irish rock legends U2 announce stadium tour and Bonnaroo dates as part of "The Joshua Tree" 30th anniversary tour.

MANCHESTER, TN — As has been rumored for weeks, Irish rock legends U2 are set to play the annual Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tenn., according to a release sent out Monday morning. The release also confirmed dates for U2's stadium tour in celebration of their seminal album "The Joshua Tree."

Bonnaroo will announce the rest of its lineup for this year's festival, which runs June 8-11, on Wednesday. For their part, U2 announced a tour of 24 stadia in North America and Europe, beginning May 12 in Vancouver, with the North American leg concluding July 1 in Cleveland.

Bonnaroo is the only festival on the tour schedule and is the first time U2 has headlined a festival in the United States.

The High Flying Birds, the current project of Noel Gallagher, formerly of Oasis, will open in Europe.

Bonnaroo ticket sales fell precipitously in 2015, selling 28,000 fewer than the year before and far below its 10-year average of 75,000. Last summer was the first time the festival had been fully controlled by concert promotion behemoth LiveNation and music industry observers said a rather middling slate of headliners — Pearl Jam, LCD Soundsystem and Dead & Company — likely contributed to the drop-off in sales, according to a report from The Tennessean.
