Initially, the report says, the child's mother reported the baby fell from the bed to the floor in her presence while being cared by the father. But she later changed her story, saying not only was she not there when the incident occurred but lied to protect the man, according to the affidavit. She also told police she believed Rivera was responsible for the child's injuries judging from a past history of abuse toward the child and an older sibling.

According to police, Rivera admitted to causing bruises on the baby's cheeks. Police said he later showed them on a doll how he appliced a blow to the young victim's head with the palm of his hand, according to the newspaper account.
