From May 6:
AUSTIN, TX -- Saturday’s Powerball jackpot of more than $400 million could make for the mother of all Mothers Day gifts.
No winner emerged for Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot, which means that the drawing for Saturday is now $415 million, with a tidy sum of $269.7 million if you opt for the cash value.
The winning Powerball numbers for Wednesday, May 4 are: 47, 69, 30, 66, 57, 3.
But again, no one drew those numbers. So there’s a chance -- an infinitesimal one, to be sure, but a chance nonetheless.
The potential winnings pale by comparison to the record-shattering, mind-numbingly-huge $1.6 billion jackpot that was doled out in january to winners in California, Florida and Tennessee. But $415 million is a nice sum in its own right (I mean, have you priced avocadoes lately?).
So what is this Powerball of which we speak? It’s a multi-state lottery. Tickets are sold at $2 apiece in 44 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
The pot starts at a mere $40 million and then grows exponentially from there when no winning numbers are drawn.
Let’s take the record-shattering, mind-numbingly-huge January jackpot as an example. In just the drawings, it went from a paltry $355 million to the record-shattering, mind-numbingly-huge $1.6 billion.
So how do you play this Powerball? Players pick five numbers from 1 to 69 plus a sixth “Powerball” number from 1 to 26. There are several ways to win, but one must match all five numbers plus the Powerball exactly in order to collect the ultimate jackpot.
We hear you asking: So how infinitesimal are the chances of actually winning the big pot? Their rather long odds -- 1 in 292,301,338.
But think about how you could take mom to lunch for Mothers Day without the added step of clipping coupons or scheduling the trip to time with the early bird special. And you’d even have some extra cash for dessert.
