Round Rock Student's Artwork Featured In Governor's Office
'Cuentos en mi rostro' depicts young artist's time spent in Mexico before her family's immigration to the U.S.

ROUND ROCK, TX -- The work of a young artist from Grisham Middle School was recently selected for exhibition at the Texas governor's ofice.
The featured piece is titled "Cuentos en mi Rostro," which translates into "Stories Upon my Face" and is representative of stitched artwork. The images are evocative of the time the student spent in Mexico, from where she moved in 2013 to immigrate to the U.S., according to Round Rock ISD officials.
Texas First Lady Cecilia Abbott selected the piece for exhibition in the official residence, school officials noted. The selection was made recently during the Texas Youth Art Show at the Bullock Texas History Museum.

The art piece, entitled “Cuentos en mi Rostro (Stories in my Face),” was chosen by Texas First Lady Cecilia Abbott at the Texas Youth Art Show, held April 4 at the Bullock Texas History Museum.
“I’m beyond proud of Lea and all that she has accomplished,” Grisham Art Teacher Kristin Goodman said. “Lea is an exemplary student artist due to her strong work ethic and the heart she puts into each creation. Her piece chosen for the Governor’s Gallery is a prime example of what makes Lea such a special student.”

Alvarado was brought up in Mexico before her parents moved to the United States in 2013. Her stitched art piece depicts a jacaranda tree and wildlife. A boat in the piece represents her mouth, the fish-filled ocean her neck, the trees around the head representative of the roads traveled en route to the U.S. and a waterfall represents Xilitla, Mexico.
“This art piece represents my memories when living in Mexico,” Alvarado told district officials in an interview. “All the colors I used are within Mexico and the flavor and the life of its unexplainable beauty.”
Alvarado was joined by three other Round Rock ISD students — Walsh Middle School students Ana Castro-Gautier and Haley Driscoll and Forest Creek Elementary School student Arissa Pradhan — in having their work displayed at the Youth Art Show.
