Bicyclist Injured By Car In South Austin Hit-And-Run Dies From Injuries

Elijah Ponthier, who would've turned 27 next week, instead becomes the 39th traffic fatality so far this year.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX -- Police said Friday a bicyclist injured in a hit-and-run crash last month has died, his death becoming a grim statistic as the city's 39th traffic death so far this year.

Elijah Ponthier, who would have turned 27 on Aug. 9, died Tuesday while being treated for his injuries at St. David's South Austin Hospital. Police now seek the public's help in finding the driver of the car -- described as a dark-colored vehicle (no other details are known) -- that hit Ponthier.

The bicyclist was hit while bicycling south on Bluff Springs Road at Chateau Village Way, police said. The incident occurred July 10 at 11:40 p.m.

Ponthier's death represents the 39th traffic fatality in 2016. At this point last year, there were 61 traffic fatalities reported. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at (512) 974-8255.
