America won it's first medal - a gold - when Ginny Thrasher won the women's 10-meter air rifle event Saturday morning. The 19-year-old set a record with a 208 in the final round, beating China's Du Li by 1 point. China's Yi Siling won bronze.

Thrasher is an NCAA champion at West Virginia. The Virginia native was facing two former gold medal winners in the two runner-ups.

Events will take place everyday at all different times of the day. Many of the medal rounds for the most popular sports don't begin until after the weekend, swimming being a notable exception; track and field events don't begin until Friday, Aug. 12.
The most popular events will air in primetime on NBC, which has the broadcast rights to the games.
