Massive Underground Fire Erupts at Market Common in Clarendon [VIDEO]

Firefighters have finally gotten control of an electrical fire underground at the shopping center.

Firefighters have gotten an electrical fire at the Market Common shopping center under control, but authorities are still warning local residents to avoid the area.

"Fire is contained. Ventilation is ongoing," the Arlington County Fire Department tweeted shortly before 11 a.m. "Crews rotating through rehab and being released. Still avoid the area."

Authorities shut down eastbound Clarendon Boulevard Tuesday morning as firefighters battled the electrical fire at the Market Common shopping center. Images on Twitter show a thick cloud of black smoke hovering over North Arlington, and video shows flames kicking up from underground on the traffic loop that goes through the Market Common. Firefighters were dispatched shortly before 9 a.m.

A video uploaded by the Arlington County Fire Department showed a truck applying "Purple-K" to the fire, which is a dry-chemical fire-suppression agent. Firefighters are using Purple K because it is a bad idea to use water on an electrical fire, the fire department said.
