Sterling Homes Hit By Rocks And Debris From Quarry Blast

A planned explosion at a quarry on Thursday morning blasted rocks and other debris into a nearby neighborhood in Sterling, damaging homes and cars.
One individual sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment, according to the Loudoun County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management.

Fire and rescue crews responded at 10:47 a.m. Thursday to reports of falling rocks damaging homes in the area of Old Ox Road near the intersection of Oakgrove Road. They discovered that falling debris had damaged several structures and cars in the area, the fire department said.
An initial investigation showed that a scheduled blast in a nearby quarry inadvertently sent debris into the air, the fire department said. The Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office was called to the scene to document the incident.

In addition, the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy (DMME) responded to the scene to investigate the incident. Any residents who believe they were affected by the incident should report their complaint to DMME at 434-951-6310.
