More FCPS Snow Days on the Horizon? Last Day of School Date May Change

Last day of school could end up being June 23 instead of June 20.

More FCPS Snow Days on the Horizon? Last Day of School Date May Change

With a major winter storm making its way to Northern Virginia this week, parents and students must be thinking: Are more snow days on the horizon?

If Fairfax County Public Schools closes for more snow days this week, how might that impact the rest of the school year?

Patch asked FCPS spokesman John Torre about that Tuesday, more than 24 hours before the snow will likely begin to fall on Northern Virginia.

"As far as makeup days, we have a 183-day calendar – 180 days are required and the three extra days are built in for weather emergencies and do not need to be made up," he said in an email to Patch.

Here's a look at the snow days/makeup days Fairfax County students already have under their belts, information provided by Torre:

  • The first two snow days of the 2013-2014 school year were in December.
  • The third snow day was Jan. 7, so those three days do not need to be made up.
  • Weather day 4 was Jan. 21 and the makeup day is Feb 17. (President's Day)
  • Weather day 5 was Jan. 22 and will be made up Apr. 7.
  • Weather day 6 was Jan. 23 and does not need to be made up. (In Virginia, school districts have to make up the first five missed instructional days/snow days. Then they have to make up every other day until 15 days are missed.)

School is scheduled to end Friday, June 20. The next snow day would require a makeup day on Monday, June 23.

The district gets a pass with the eighth cancellation day, but upon day nine, the last day of school will get pushed back to Tuesday, June 24, according to FCPS.
