Alexandria Democratic Committee Elects New Chair

The Alexandria Democratic Committee Monday night elected Clarence Tong as its new chair for 2014 and 2015.

More than 125 members voted at Monday’s meeting as the committee selected its new executive board.

“There are many important elections coming up in the next two years,” Tong said in a release. “The ADC is a strong political organization that will stay focused on keeping Democrats energized across Alexandria. We know that when Obama coalition voters turn out, Democrats win.”

Tong previously served a deputy vice chair for communications with the ADC. The Old Town resident has worked in politics and government for the past decade, including serving in the executive branch and as a senior congressional and campaign aide.

Tong replaces Dak Hardwick, who opted not to seek another term as chair but plans to stay involved.

In a November note to ADC membership announcing his decision not to return as chair, Hardwick commented on the unprecedented success the party had reached in the city in 2012 in 2013. Democrats went undefeated in Alexandria elections—including a sweep of the city council and mayor elections in 2012.

Other new ADC executive board members include: Holly Wallace, Vice Chair for Finance and Administration; Laurie MacNamara, Vice Chair for Precinct Operations – East; Kathryn Sorensen, Vice Chair for Precinct Operations – West; Mary Lyman, Secretary; Elisabeth Campbell, Treasurer; Michael Cohen, Vice Chair of Communications; Helen Clemens, Vice Chair for Technology; William Mount, Vice Chair for Resolutions; Larry Benenson, Vice Chair for Community Outreach; Pat Mulloy, Leadership Circle Chair; Boyd Walker, Vice Chair for Volunteer Coordination.
