New Safeway in Alexandria to Open 'Before Year's End,' Spokesman Says
The Safeway under construction at Quaker and King Street in Alexandria will open before year's end, according to a Safeway spokesman.

A firm date will likely be announced by the end of the summer, said Craig Muckle, Safeway spokesman.

The new Safeway store, which has been steadily rising from the "ashes" of the old Safeway, which closed last year on July 13, is costing a reported $11 million.

Some of the highlights of the new store at 3526 King St. in Alexandria: "It's going to be a much larger store, in the neighborhood of 55,000 square feet, with some sheltered parking, some parking below the store, at grade —we're not digging any holes," a store spokesman said earlier this year.

Expect to see larger produce, deli, seafood, wine and floral departments, he said, as well as a likely Starbucks and Bergmann's dry cleaners.

"As much as we hate to go away, it's painful for people, we understand that, we will come back with a lot of fanfare," he said.
