Old Town IT, a firm specializing in technology consulting and software development for associations, was named one of the 500 fastest-growing private companies in the United States last month by Inc. Magazine.
“It’s exciting,” said Tim Ward, the company’s founder. “It’s great for recruiting. We’re small but we’re growing and this adds some extra legitimacy.”
The company has grown staggeringly over the last three years—844 percent, according to Inc. And that’s in the face of one of the toughest economic periods in this country’s history.
Ward says a lot of it has to do with customer service.
“Even though we’re a tech company, we’re a people-oriented business,” he said. “Our motto is ‘Do what you say when you say it.’ … We’re enthusiastic about making a delivery on time and when we say we will.”
The company is headquartered on Mt. Vernon Avenue in the offices above Pork Barrel BBQ, but also has an office in Springfield, Mo.
Old Town IT’s clients are trade associations and professional societies, many of which are based in Old Town or elsewhere in the Washington, D.C. region.
Ward said the Alexandria office is for the “client-facing elements” of the business, while the Missouri office is for software development and recruiting computer science majors from nearby universities.
Ward founded the company in 2007 and ran it out of his home. The company’s first office was located in a room behind the Greener Cleaner of Del Ray before moving one block up the road.
“Our clients love coming to Del Ray and getting lunch at the Cheesetique,” he said.
Old Town IT was the only Alexandria-based business to make the Inc. 500 list. The Del Ray Business Association recently had a banner placed below the company’s windows honoring the accomplishment.
