Debut YA Novel Weaves a Tale of Witches into Author’s Hometown in Northern Virginia
Exciting new young adult book about witches combines love and adventure in Northern Virginia, including Fairfax, Falls Church and Manassas.

Many authors write about their hometown. However, not many authors re-imagine it with a secret underbelly of witches. The debut novel by K.L. Kranes combines love, lies, death and Wiccan intrigue in the fictitious Falls City, Virginia, an homage to the area where Ms. Kranes grew up and attended high school in Falls Church.
The story follows Dagny and Marc, sixteen-year-olds caught on opposite sides of a war between two Wiccan factions who encourage their children to hate and even kill each other. When Dagny and Marc meet by chance and fall in love, they are forced to hide their relationship from their families or else face dire consequences. As the pair struggles to keep the secret, they realize the only way to stay together may be to tear apart their beliefs and their families.
“Setting the novel in Northern Virginia just seemed to make sense. It’s such a history-rich and diverse area. There were a lot of opportunities to build a story here,” said Ms. Kranes. “It was also exciting to weave in not just personal, but also historical landmarks, like Manassas Battlefield Park and Great Falls.”
