Robinson Rams Set to Play in 20th Annual Pohanka Chantilly Classic

Robinson Secondary School basketball players are set to play once again in the Pohanka Chantilly Classic coming up next week.

For 20 years, Chantilly High School has hosted one of the area's most exciting holiday basketball tournaments, the Pohanka Chantilly Classic. This year’s tournament, played from Dec. 27 to Dec. 29, will feature 16 schools from Northern Virginia, Richmond, Maryland and Washington, DC. Last year’s tournament featured some of the best and most exciting basketball in its history, with Wilson High School of Washington, DC winning the boys tournament and Georgetown Visitation winning the girls title.

“We are pleased to continue this great tradition of fine basketball with our friends at Pohanka," said Tournament Director and Head Girls Coach Kurt Sporkmann of Chantilly High School. "We take great pride in making this one of the finest tournaments in the area year in and year out. This year we will be celebrating 20 years of terrific basketball, a supportive and generous community and our title sponsor.”

On the boys side, the Chantilly Chargers feature an up tempo style of play with sophomore guards Tyler Femi and Dylan Madawo, senior forward Brian Sydnor, and junior guard DeAndre Harris. The Chargers, who are a perfect 7-0 this season, are looking to reclaim the title won last year by Wilson, following Chantilly’s 2010 win over South County. In addition to Chantilly, Wilson, and South County, the Robinson Rams of Fairfax will participate in the boy’s tournament. Robinson is the defending Concorde District Champions.

One newcomer to the Pohanka Chantilly Classic is Patriot High School from Nokesville. Mills Godwin, traditionally one of the Richmond area’s more successful programs, Wilson High School from Washington, DC and Mountain View from Stafford return again this year and round out the boys' field.

The girls' tournament also features an exciting array of teams, including Georgetown Visitation, which is traditionally ranked by the Washington Post as one of the DC area’s best teams. Langley, George Mason, Robinson, Mills Godwin and Thomas Jefferson join the Chargers this year in welcoming McLean HS back to the tournament. Georgetown Visitation is traditionally one of the top teams in the DC Metro area and returns to defend its 2010 and 2011 championships.

Admission is $6 for an all-day pass and $15 for a three-day pass. Concessions will be open beginning at noon, and will feature many of the Chantilly area's local restaurants' menu items.  Complimentary coffee, donuts and bagels will be available for our morning game fans. Chantilly students with their high school ID or any CYA basketball player under the age of 12 wearing their team shirt with a paying adult gets a $3 discount.
