Herndon Friends Meeting announced this week that James Madison High School freshman Hannah Fox Grossman of Vienna submitted the winning entry in the annual ornament design competition held last month.

According to a Herndon Friends Meeting press release, Fox Grossman's entry, "Fire In Bird," depicts an elegant image of light with flames embedded in a bird's wings. The artists solicited for the competition were asked to interpret light as an enduring symbol of the hope among all the world's faiths.

Herndon Friends, with the help of Pro-Type Industries in Sterling, turned "Fire In Bird" into 200 gold and silver metal ornaments that will be sold for $15 each to support Fairfax and Prince William counties' Medical Care for Children Partnerships.

All money raised from the sale of the ornaments, minus the cost of materials, will be donated to MCCP. MCCP uses donations to buy health insurance policies for the children of parents who are working, but unable to afford health care. One year's health insurance policy costs $325.

Fox Grossman received a $100 prize for her winning entry. For more information contact Paul Murphy at 703-517-2784 or by e-mail at murphy005@verizon.net.
