West Springfield District Police Officers Host Annual Youth Bicycle Rodeo
Kids between 6-12 years old learned bicycle safety tips from officers and participated in an obstacle course at the West Springfield District Police Station.
The station hosts the rodeo at least twice a year, according to Master Police Officer J.T. Frey with the Crime Prevention Office.
Neighborhood Patrol Unit officers taught participants several bicycle safety tips using an obstacle course that was set up for demonstrations. Some of the demonstrations included the proper way to steer your bike and pay attention to your surroundings, the importance of wearing a helmet and other safety tips.
Personnel from the FCPD traffic and operations support divisions helped teach kids about police equipment. There were also several police vehicles on display for the kids to check out. McGruff the Crime Dog also stopped by to hang out with the children.
The Fairfax County Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association also sold a variety of baked goods during the event.
As a special treat, rodeo participants also had the chance to view an FCPD helicopter during the event.
