Time's Person of the Year Finalists

Eight finalists were announced Tuesday. One will be named Time's Person of the Year Wednesday.

Time's Person of the Year will be announced Wednesday.  Reader's were invited to cast their vote, but the real choice is made by Time editors, said executive editor Radhika Jones.

“While we don’t make our selection based on the poll results, it’s always interesting to see where some of our preferred candidates end up,” Jones said.

The eight finalists were announced today.  They are (in no particular order):

"TIME's Person of the Year is bestowed by the editors on the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill, and embodied what was important about the year," said the magazine's website.

Kim Jong Un, supreme leader of North Korea, was ranked first in Time's "completely unscientific" reader poll, with 5.6 million votes.

Time's Person of the Year 2012 will be announced Dec. 19 on the Today show, on  Time.com and via Time’s Twitter handle
