UPDATE: GW Parkway Reopened After Sinkhole Repaired

At least one lane of Southbound GW Parkway is getting through Tuesday night.

Southbound George Washington Parkway has reopened Tuesday night after being closed for nearly 24 hours due to a sinkhole and snarling traffic.

One lane was reopened at about 8:30 p.m. and both lanes are expected to be open by 5 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Federal Highway Administration.

Southbound GW Parkway was closed all day Tuesday during repairs of the sinkhole on the parkway, south of Route 123. Northbound lanes were open.

Entrances from the Beltway to southbound GW Parkway were closed for most of Tuesday.

The sinkhole on GW Parkway was at first reported to be 30 feet wide but that report by VDOT was not true; the sinkhole was 30 inches wide, not 30 feet wide; VDOT reportedly gave the wrong dimensions.

The large sinkhole closed a section of southbound George Washington Parkway starting Monday night.
