Alexandria Cancer Survivor To Stand Up 24 Hours For Cancer Fundraiser

ALEXANDRIA, VA — For a 10th year, Alexandria cancer survivor will stand up for 24 consecutive hours to raise money for cancer research.

Pat Malone, an Air Force veteran, is hosting his 10th annual Stand Up To Cancer fundraiser. The national program associated with the Entertainment Industry Foundation to raise money for national and international cancer research. The fundraiser will run from 4:26 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10 through 4:26 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11 at Fire Works American Pizzeria & Bar at 2350 Clarendon Blvd., Arlington, VA.

The ending day of the Stand Up To Cancer fundraiser marks 10 years since Malone had a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor removed by surgery on Feb. 11, 2014. The seven-hour procedure was completed by neurosurgeon Dr. Walter Faillace at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Months of radiation, rehabilitation and physical therapy led to Malone being declared cancer free in the spring and summer of 2014. Today, the Alexandria resident wants to give back by raising money for cancer research and honoring the military and civilian medical team at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center's John P. Murtha Cancer Center as well as the Radiation Oncology Clinic at Fort Belvoir's Alexander T. Augusta Medical Center.

Residents may donate to Malone's fundraiser online and in person with checks made out to 'Stand Up To Cancer.' All proceeds from the public support Stand Up to Cancer's cancer research.
