Alexandria Crossing Guard Wins Most Outstanding In VA Award

In honor of Crossing Guard Appreciation Day, an Alexandria crossing guard was recognized as one of the best in Virginia.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Crossing Guard Appreciation Day on Wednesday is an opportune time to recognize the unsung heroes who help students cross roads safely every day. A crossing guard in Alexandria is one of three recognized as 2023's Most Outstanding Crossing Guards in Virginia.

Richard Thomas, who has been a crossing guard at Alexandria's John Adams Elementary School for 19 years, was one of the honorees by the Virginia Department of Transportation. VDOT accepts nominations each year for Virginia's Most Outstanding Crossing Guard Award. All nominees for Most Outstanding Crossing Guard receive a letter of appreciation from VDOT, while winners get a certificate and small gift.

Other honorees were Courtney Markowski of Round Hill Elementary in Loudoun County, Dave Becker of Emerick Elementary and Blue Ridge Middle School in Loudoun County, John Winnett of Virginia Beach Middle School in Virginia Beach, Gloria Query of Crestwood Middle and Treakle Elementary Schools in Chesapeake and Barbara Beniamino of Butts Road Intermediate School in Chesapeake.

The nomination for Thomas says the crossing guard manages a complex intersection while keeping students and families safe, including during heavy rain and strong winds and after-school care cancellations.

On top of Thomas's commitment to safety, the nominator says his friendliness gives students a positive start to their day.

"In his remarkable tenure, Mr. Thomas is set apart by his efficient traffic management skills but especially his genuine warmth and friendliness," the nomination reads. "As students approach, he welcomes them with high-fives and contagious enthusiasm, creating an atmosphere of joy and comfort as they begin their school day. His commitment to making every child feel welcome is truly commendable."

The elementary school shared a message of thanks to Thomas in light of his award.

"We couldn't be prouder or more grateful! Give him an extra high-five today (or let him know how much we appreciate his service)!" the school shared on social media.
